Archaeological site Roermond - street of little Meuse stones

Experience the archaeological story from the little Meuse stone street in the Neerstraat. Download the app and get face-to-face on site with our archaeologist. He tells you the history and the importance of the Meuse stone street through most modern virtual technology. This makes you feel as if you transform into the past.

Beneath the modern-day Neerstraat, a street dating back to 1250-1275, an ancient road has been found. It consists of Meuse stones and wooden stakes laid at right-angles. The stakes seem to be applied at a later date to prevent subsidence or to provide passing carts with more road hold for carts that were heading for the Markt as it’s a slight climb uphill. This extraordinary part of the road is in surprisingly good condition. Parts of it are on display in the Historiehuis which is also located in the Neerstraat. Beneath the road made of Meuse stones, several footprints were found, as well as prints of hoofs which are thought to belong to a pig. These were set in unhardened loam pathway dating back to 1150-1200!
