Experience the archaeological story of the Roman villa "op de Solberg" in Beesel. Download the app and stand face-to-face on location with our archaeologist. He will tell you the until now hidden history of this villa by means of the latest virtual techniques. It is as if you are transformed into the past.

In 1978, the foundations of a Roman villa from the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD were found on the Solberg. The word villa stands for gentleman's farm; so it was a kind of agricultural business. Grain was produced here, not only for own use but also for the city's population and for the Roman soldiers. The Roman Empire hardly expanded at this time. Rome's influence on the rest of the conquered areas diminished and the Germanic people saw an opportunity to attack and plunder Roman wealth.

Researchers have made discoveries that show that the villa was destroyed in the mid-3rd century by Germanic tribes who rebelled against Roman rule. It is a turning point in our history because around 400 AD the Romans withdrew and the year 476 marked the end of the Roman Empire.
