Between the 13th and 18th century, the Munsterplein and the adjacent area were the site of an abbey. Around 1220, count Gerard of Guelders and his wife Margaretha of Brabant founded a nunnery here. The memorial tomb of the royal couple is located inside the church. His mother was the monastery’s first abbess. In 1796, The French, who occupied Roermond at the time, closed the nunnery and turned the buildings into barracks and a prison. Nowadays, only the Munsterkerk (Munster church) remains. The archaeological remains of the abbey are still under ground. They are protected as a national heritage archaeological site.
