Roermond has a long history as a city of stained-glass artists. In 2009, over 12,000 kilograms of old glass were found in a basement in the Dionysiusstraat (Dionysus Street). It turned out to be waste that was collected by a glass painter just after 1600 A.D. with the aim of melting it down. It contains thousands of fragments of fused stained-glass dating from the end of the 14th century up to the early 17th century.
In the 16th century, artists in the Lowlands were influenced by the Italian renaissance style. In Antwerp, Cornelis Floris developed his own variety: the Floris style. In the art of glass painting, the Floris style was frequently seen in decorations on images, texts and coats of armour. These were all found here among the fragments. Over the centuries the glass arts have further developed.
