Archaeological site Roermond - the Commanders house

Experience the archaeological story from the Commanders house. Download the app and get face-to-face on site with our archaeologist. He tells you the history and the importance of the Commanders house through most modern virtual technology. This makes you feel as if you transform into the past.

Early traces of life in The Commander’s House relinquished some remarkable finds such as remnants of books, stationery and an extraordinary knife dating back to the late Middle Ages. All signs of the wealth and the inhabitants’ level of literacy.

In the hands of the notable Van Dulcken family, it was turned into a post office. Later again, it becomes a general hospital. After the house was traded for another house, it becomes known as the Commander’s House and it has frequently changed hands ever since.

In the middle of the 19th century, the house was divided into two separate buildings and it lost its characteristic exterior. With the construction of a new shop in 2017-18, the two buildings were re-united. And the characteristic archway that coaches used to pass under is visible once again, referring to the building’s rich history.
