The villa Plasmolen is located on the Sint Jansberg and was first discovered in the 19th century. The building has been reconstructed and has a symmetrical layout. Archaeological excavations revealed artifacts from Roman times, including pottery and building materials. The villa provides insight into the history and culture of the region. It is the largest Roman residence (84 meters wide and 21 meters deep) ever found in the Netherlands. This Villa Urbana, a luxurious country villa, was equipped with all luxury and comfort and was strategically located near the Meuse and the city of Nijmegen.
Remains of the Villa Plasmolen were discovered in 1931. By digging test trenches, the contours of the villa could be determined. Treasure hunters with metal detectors turned the ground hoping for a nice find. To prevent further damage, a metal net was placed underground in the following years.
Many Roman artifacts from the villa, such as a white terracotta bottle, can be viewed at the Limburgs Museum in Venlo.
NOTE: The location of the spear is on the Sint Maartensweg, in the forest near the info board, from where visitors can also see the contours of the villa.
