Valkenburg castle is the only hilltop bastion in the Netherlands, at the heart of the Valkenburg domain. Constructed in marlstone, the castle was extended and rebuilt several times until around six hundred years later, having endured its fair share of sieges, the curtain fell.
The Dutch were defending against the French invaders, when Stadholder Willem III ordered his army to blow up the castle on 10 December 1672. The fortress would never fall into enemy hands again. Locals plundered the debris and now all that remains is the ruin you see today.
