Archeological site Valkenburg aan de Geul: Vuursteenbijl en Mergelblok

Flint and marl have been mined in the quarries of Valkenburg for centuries.
Archie, the virtual archaeologist from the free Archeo Route Limburg app, is happy to tell you more about it!

Valkenburg is the marl city – this special building stone is found here locally, together with flint.
First, flint was collected from riverbanks and later mined underground.
In the limestone rock wall along today’s Plenkertstraat, traces of prehistoric flint mining were discovered in 1992.
In the Middle Ages, stonemasons used marl as a building material. From the 12th century onwards, many buildings were constructed from this stone –
including the castle ruins and fortifications!
