Archaeological site Voerendaal - under the church tower

The certificate mentions that the church was consecrated by pope Leo IX on the tenth of August 1049. The St.-Laurentius church in the town centre is the only Dutch church that was consecrated by a pope. It is assumed that for centuries, this church from the 11th century used to stand by itself on a central point surrounded by a number of large estates, because there is no mention of the village of Voerendaal until the beginning of the 17th century.

For the first time, recent archaeological research has offered insight in the development of the village of Voerendaal. Archaeologists conducted extensive research in 2015. They uncovered foundations of several structures, floors, wells, column supports, waterholes, cesspools and a lot more. The oldest foundations made of natural stone date back to the late Middle Ages. Older remains may hide underneath the preserved foundations.
More construction took place from the 16th century onwards. Up until the 20th century, the old walls were used as a foundation for younger buildings. The many findings not only inform us about the habitation history of this location, but also about the living and eating habits of the village.
