In the Middle of the Action: The Guardhouse of Stevensweert
Did you know that Stevensweert used to be a Spanish fortress? Right in the center stood the most important building: the guardhouse.
It was built in 1633 by the Spanish commander Don Francisco de Moncada. This was where plans were made, keys were kept, and the whole fortress was watched. Streets ran out from the guardhouse in a star shape, leading to all parts of the defenses. Pretty smart.
Soldiers kept guard in front of the building, and on the square they practiced marching. If they broke the rules, they were punished there too.
Today, the building looks different, but visit the Stevensweert regional museum to discover the full story.
