During the Second World War, fighting also took place in Limburg. During the construction of defensive works here in Kessel, parts of two buildings of a Roman villa were discovered by chance on the Ondersteweg, overlooking the Meuse. Excavations were carried out by the National Museum of Antiquities even during the war. There was an outbuilding intended as a barn, storage, or the quarters of servants or laborers. The other was considerably larger and is the main building of the villa, with a corridor and living spaces, some of which were equipped with a hypocaust. We're talking about underfloor heating! Such a system consists of a raised floor heated from below by means of an oven. A completely intact hypocaust tile has been found.
