Our territory was part of the Spanish Empire 450 years ago, and Spanish King Philip II wanted to convert everyone to the Catholic faith. The population rebelled, marking the beginning of the Eighty Years' War. During a 12-year truce, it became clear that the Spaniards were losing their grip on the northern part. They came up with a bold plan: the construction of a canal, the Fossa Eugenia. Shipping would be under the control of the Spanish government after the canal was dug via southern routes. Construction began in 1625, but the gigantic project was never completed. You can still see a part of the canal route and the remnants of the meters-high ramparts here.
