In the night of 8 to 9 October 1753, highwayman Hulster Heinke sets fire to four corners of the Gelderse Postwagen tavern on Herungerweg. People inside die. After his execution on Venlo’s Market Square, his corpse is displayed here together with Zwarte Trui on Hangman’s Hill. The whole gang is put to death. Venlo’s Galgenheuvel was a macabre place. Passers-by had full view of the corpses. A reminder to stay on the right side of the law.
Two core samples from the hill show that it’s not a natural formation. It’s an artificial hill. Built by people. Going back further, old historical maps show there were burial mounds here from prehistoric times. Today, the area is part of a cultural history walk along New Manresa park.
PLEASE NOTE: The location of the spear is in New Manresa Park.
